What is Reiki?
Reiki is a complementary, holistic healing practice that gently supports the body's natural ability to heal itself. It is gentle and non-invasive and can assist in relieving or reducing pain and discomfort by balancing the body's energy centers, or "chakras". It is a natural process that supports relaxation and healing by removing blockages to the flow of energy in your body, facilitating balance and support on all levels - physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
Where does Reiki originate?
Reiki's origins are Japanese and the word means "universal life force energy". Mikao Usui is credited with rediscovering the root system now called Reiki. His tradition and methods were passed through several grandmasters of Reiki. Today, Reiki takes many forms, however, The Usui System of Natural Healing is still the form most widely practiced. Practitioners and Master Teachers are trained through an initiation process where Masters pass on their knowledge and expertise to their students.
How is Reiki administered?
The practitioner acts as a conduit for universal energy, in order to rebalance and clear blockages in the chakras, or energy centers. We connect to Reiki primarily through our hands which are placed lightly on or just above the body.
Does Reiki have any religious affiliations?
No, Reiki is not connected with any religious organization. Since energy & love are universal, so is Reiki. Men & women from all religious backgrounds practice, receive and use Reiki.
Can I learn Reiki?
Yes! Reiki can be easily learned by anyone of any age. It is practiced throughout the world by people of many faiths and cultures. Since we all have an energy system, we all have the ability to tap into it for our better health. Many people want to learn Reiki to be able to give it to themselves on a daily basis and share it with their family & friends. Once opened up to the energy system, you will always have the ability to access this type of healing. It will always flow freely within you, and tends to increase in strength the more frequently you use it.
Is Reiki appropriate for an acute condition or a chronic condition?
Please note that Reiki is not a substitute for standard medical or psychological care of any kind. Rather, it can be used to enhance the effectiveness of any complementary or conventional treatment. If you have an acute condition you should seek out a licensed medical professional immediately. If you have a chronic issue, Reiki can be an excellent complement in your health or wellness plan, and may increase the healing process.
Are there any medical conditions where I should not receive Reiki?
Reiki is a wonderful complement in a health or wellness plan. To our knowledge, there are no contraindications to Reiki. It supports your work with your primary care providers.
If I have the flu or a contagious disease should I have a Reiki session?
As a kindness to your Practitioner and other clients, please wait until you are feeling better and not contagious before scheduling a session.
What should I wear to a Reiki Session?
You are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing, remove glasses, shoes and metal items, such as jewelry. You are welcome to remain fully clothed or disrobe, depending on your comfort level. Either way, you will be covered by a sheet and blanket. We also kindly ask that you leave your cell phone and other electronic devices off or on silent so there are no interruptions during your session.
After I leave my session, should I do anything special?
If possible, plan ahead and make time afterward to either rest or get in some light exercise depending on your specific needs. Eat healthy food and drink plenty of water to hydrate your body as your body’s energy system may be moving at a more optimum rate. It may also be beneficial to spend some quiet time that day or evening after your session to journal or to contemplate as you may have some insights and further mental clarity as your body continues to process the Reiki session. Meditation, massage or yoga are also great activities. It is best to refrain from alcohol or heavy substances on the day of a Reiki session so that your body can accept the energy transfer fully, and so that you will receive the maximum benefit from your session.
WHAT TO EXPECT
How long is a Reiki session?
A session can generally last anywhere from 30 minutes to 90 minutes depending on the Practitioner. Even 5-10 minutes for acute conditions can be beneficial. If working on more serious or chronic issues, a few sessions or a longer treatment time may be recommended.
Will I be lying down on a massage table or sitting?
Reiki is usually performed on a client who is fully reclined comfortably on a massage table. It also may be performed on a client who is semi-reclined on a massage chair or recliner. If you have mobility or pain issues, please communicate these to your Practitioner so they may make you your most comfortable for the session.
Am I clothed during my Reiki session?
In general, yes. If your Reiki Practitioner is also a licensed Massage Therapist and you are receiving both massage and Reiki, then you would speak with your practitioner about your preference. If you prefer to be fully clothed, you will want to wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing and remove any metal accessories during the treatment.
What will I feel during the session?
You may feel a very slight tingling, heat, or energy, or nothing at all. Some people see colors, have an influx of old memories, or feel different sensations. The sensations or lack of are not a barometer of the Reiki, they are just how your particular body senses energy. Most clients feel a sense of relaxation and peace. Reiki is so relaxing that sometimes clients may fall asleep during the session. Either way, you will still receive all of the benefits of the session, sleeping or awake.
Do I offer gratuity to my Reiki Practitioner?
This is at the client’s discretion. If you felt you had a beneficial and caring session, then you may wish to show your gratitude.
Is there talking during the session?
Usually, a session is done without talking and the practitioner may have soft ambient music playing in the background to aid in your relaxation. You may want to think of it as a meditation opportunity and tune in to the experience. Please feel free ask questions or address any concerns such as: adjusting the room temperature or music; a sensation you would like to discuss; or any discomfort. Your practitioner wants the best for you and wants to make your session the best experience possible. After the session, they may ask if there is anything you would like to share. This is good feedback for your practitioner’s notes for planning your next session.
